If you don't like Black's game after 1 e4 e5 2 d4 exd4 3 Qxd4 Nc6, I suggest you take up some other game. Chess is probably not your cup o' tea. Black is already ahead in development at move THREE. First, the French is not more complicated than, say, the Ruy -- it's just a different opening. Second, it's not like beginners won't be exposed to e4/e5 openings at all. Most players that use this opening tend to go for it to avoid too much opening theory. It's pretty easy for black to equalize though, so I wouldn't recommend playing it.
